Assurance of genetic diversity in red deer in the cultural landscape
Project
Project code: 2807BM013
Contract period: 19.12.2007
- 31.10.2012
Budget: 147,324 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The goal of the project (projects: 07BM010; 07BM011; 07BM012; 07BM013; 07BM014) is the development of an exemplary management concept at the level of conservancies to ensure genetic diversity, the sustainable utilization of the populations and habitat preservation of the necessary functions. The concept is developed with the participation of local land users with the intention of a long-term preservation of red deer in adaptive populations in the cultural landscape. The red deer serves as a model species for the implementation of new target aspects (genetic diversity, habitat use) in wildlife management in the context of a multi-dimensional monitoring (habitat, genetics, behavior, management). In particular, the hunting should be checked using inventory control and reliable data on the basis of the results will be further developed (section analysis, stock assessment, telemetry). The conservancies will be able to optimize their long-term deer management by simple methods. These include not only the formulation of qualitative, quantitative and spatial management and development objectives specific statements on hunting strategies and methods and the effective hunting season.
