The German-Dutch border region with the International Nature Reserve Bourtanger Moor - Bargerveen is characterized by its vast and cultivated peat bogs. Areas where peat cutting is still a common practice as well as protected fields are located in a region that is dominated by intensive agricultural land use and animal husbandry, particularly by poultry farms in Germany. Atmospheric ammonia loads originated from livestock buildings are transported over long distances and might lead to an exceedance of ecosystem-specific critical N loads. To better control nitrogen deposition, this project aimes for solutions of a more sustainable and optimzed agricultural management. The major objective is the determination of current nitrogen deposition fluxes in the project area in adequate spatial resolution, its assessment and formulation of mitigation strategies. For this, ammonia concentrations and N deposition in the surface boundary layer are to be projected via dispersion modeling.
