'Collaborative project: Irrigation in fruit production - minimizing water use while maintaining confidence of the grower - subproject 2 '
Project
Project code: 2815501611
Contract period: 01.06.2012
- 31.10.2015
Budget: 59,870 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
"Fruit growth is directly dependent on the water status of the plant and thus an ideal parameter to control irrigation. The aim was to develop an autonomous but user-controllable irrigation control based on an optical sensor. A camera system (smartphone) was adapted and programmed to make photographs of the fruits in chosen time intervals, transfer them to a central server system and analyze them automatically. A control algorithm to steer the irrigation system, which is user-controllable, used the information. Threshold values for starting an irrigation were developed in field experiments for sweet cherry and apple. A test at the grower level could not be implemented yet since additional development work is needed."
