Project
Project code: 2812HS006
Contract period: 01.07.2012
- 30.06.2014
Budget: 172,718 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The research project 'New Media and Change in Villages' is part of the long-term umbrella study 'Village Living Conditions in Transition: 1952, 1972, 1993, 2012'. The study comprises a survey of 3,000 residents in 14 villages in different regions of Germany. The survey of residents for the overall project has been extended by the IZT to include questions relating to the use and social impact of new media and their effect on the structure of the physical environment. The IZT is responsible for the survey of residents and for implementing it by means of personal Interviews in the two regions 'Glasow' (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, district of Pasewalk) and 'Mildenberg' (Brandenburg, district of Zehdenick-Gransee).
The focal points of the investigation on the topic 'New Media and Change in Villages' are:
infrastructure, facilities and user typology, village life and networks in the 'global village', handling information and communication, entrepreneurship, freelance work and employment with new media, young people - patterns of use and opportunities in rural areas, groups with special needs.
Regarding the methodological approach, the topic of 'new media' is fundamentally not specific to one village. This is essentially the result of the function of new media as cross-sector technology for the economy and society. In determining its regional centres for running focus groups and focus interviews, the IZT has concentrated on communities in the north and south and on peripheral regions that have fewer connections to higher-ranking centres (in addition to Glasow and Mildenberg, these also include Bockholte in Niedersachsen, Bischoffingen and Kusterdingen in Baden-Württemberg and Diepoltskirchen in Bavaria).
The results of the project are intended to provide starting points for policy-making in rural areas and for the programme and project-planning of the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.
