Project code: 2818207715
Contract period: 01.11.2016 - 31.10.2019
Budget: 218,814 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The aim was to develop a reliable method for an early selection of columnar apple trees shortly after seeding that are well suited for an effective and sustainable production. Columnar apple trees offer the chance for very efficient, resilient and low labour input growing systems. To achieve this, three offspring stemming from crosses of columnar and non-columnar parents were produced, that were characterized for tree architecture. New and promising ways of phenotyping through digitally evaluating the trees by the use of a 3D-terrestrial laser scanner were developed. Genotyping was done through random tagging Genotyping by Sequencing (rtGbS) and the resulting SNP´s (single nucleotide polymorphism) were used to produce genetic maps for determining QTL´s for traits that characterize efficient growth types. We could find a number of population dependent QTL´s that will be further analysed after the official end of the project.
