Budget: 833,046 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The project “LABEL-FIT” aims to develop solutions for the transformation of conventional barns for rearing and fattening pigs regarding to the requirements of the label “Einstiegsstufe” of the “Tierschutzlabel - Für Mehr Tierschutz” of the Deutscher Tierschutzbund e.V.. The main focus was 1) to develop and validate functional reliable comfort lying areas, 2) to increase the attractiveness of enrichment materials and 3) to develop and verify technical approaches to functional reliably remove liquid manure even if plant-based litter and/or enrichment materials is used. The technical measures were proven to be functional, however, partially resulting in high costs for reconstruction and operating. The occurrence of tail damages in undocked pigs could not be satisfactorily reduced. The findings are integrated in the guidelines of the Deutscher Tierschutzbund e.V. and are fed into various national panels dealing with a further development of farm animal husbandry accepted by the society.
