Contract period: 01.01.2017 - 31.12.2019
Budget: 188,250 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Molecular markers are already widely used in cereal and vegetable breeding to make predictions about the properties of a new candidate variety based on sequence analyses of the genetic material, which would otherwise require extensive and time-consuming field testing. This sustainable and resource-saving breeding method, however, is still in its infancy in the ornamental plant sector. The project funded here, a collaboration between the University of Hohenheim and the ornamental plant breeder Selecta one in Stuttgart, therefore had the aim of developing the bioinformatic basis (genetic maps) for the identification of molecular markers in cut and pot carnations. On this basis, relevant genomic regions (so-called QTL's) for the commercially important traits flower shelf life and fungal resistance could be identified and several molecular markers could be successfully derived. These markers are intended to make the practical variety development at Selecta one more effective and resource-saving and to lead to innovative products that expand the company's product portfolio.
