Collaborative project: Development of measures to improve the control of the apple sawfly, stinkbugs and leafrollers, and their optimal integration into the strategy for insect control in organic pomefruit growing (INSEKTOEKOOBST)

Project

Project code: 2815OE074
Contract period: 27.03.2017 - 31.03.2020
Budget: 169,500 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: animal pathogens, pome, fruit production, biological plant protection, organic farming

The project aims to develop a sustainable strategy for pest regulation in organic fruit growing in close collaboration of practice and research. Main focus is the development of measures for the control of apple sawfly, stinkbugs and leafrollers. Actually, for the control of these pests the measures available do not allow a really long term reliable strategy. Apple sawfly: The reduction of adult sawflies by the application of entomopathogenous nematodes (EPN) upon the soil surface before the sawfly hatch will be tested. Application modalities and EPN-concentration will be improved in on-farm trials in infested orchards. A monitoring of the predictability of the sawfly infestation based on the infestation in the preceeding year is part of the study. Stinkbugs: In laboratory tests, EPN and entomopathogenic fungi will be screened for their efficiency against stinkbug larvae. The most efficient control agents will be subjected to field tests to assess their control potential under practice conditions. Leafrollers: The species diversity of leafrollers, their parasitisation rate, and the diversity of leafroller parasitoids will be assessed in orchards with high infestation rates. A series of potential intelligent combinations of different measures to control the key pests will be tested (e.g. EPN against diapausing codling moth larvae) to achieve an efficient and cost effective pest control strategy.
