Collaborative project: Optimization of an attract & kill strategy for wireworm control in potato as a contribution to sustainable plant protection - Subproject 5 (ATTRACAP)

Project

Project code: 2814907115
Contract period: 15.06.2017 - 14.12.2020
Budget: 14,870 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: potato, biological plant protection, animal pathogens, crop production, crop protection, plant health

Against the background of increasing wireworm damage, especially in potato crops, the aim of the ATTRACAP project was to gain a more specific understanding of the mode of action of the product marketed under the name ATTRACAP®. The product is a capsule that releases CO2 to attract wireworms in the soil and then kills them by means of an entomopathogenic fungus (Metarhizium brunneum) that grows out of the capsules. The luring significantly increases the probability that the wireworms will come into contact with spores of the fungus and thus reduces the application rate of the fungal isolate. The project focused in particular on field trials in which different application rates and new formulations of the capsules were tested against the background of different biotic factors and wireworm species. Another aim was to optimise and thus make the production of the capsules more cost-effective by the company BIOCARE GmbH. In addition, the susceptibility of potato varieties was tested in the laboratory on the basis of established permanent cultivars and additional attractively acting substances were identified.
