Collaborative project: Investigations on the prevalence of black root rot of carrots in southwest Germany focused on the course of infection during postharvest handling (Chalara)

Project

Project code: 2815NA178
Contract period: 01.07.2017 - 30.06.2020
Budget: 128,906 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Black root rot of carrots is caused by the fungal pathogens Chalaropsis thielavioides and/or Chalara elegans. Infections with one or both of these pathogens cause to enormous losses due to postharvest decay. Up to now, little is known on infection in the field and during harvesting, washing, polishing and packaging. Therefore, the investigations aim to evaluate the prevalence of C. thielavioides and C. elegans on the field as well as in carrots during postharvest handling. Each year, three carrot-producing companies will provide samples of carrots directly after manual and mechanical harvesting, after washing, polishing and packaging, respectively. Carrots are produced according to guidelines of integrated (IP) or biological (bio) crop production. These samples consist of carrots from different stages of the washing process for marketing. From 2017 until 2020 (july until december), prevalence of C. thielavioides and C. elegans will be determined on carrot-samples from 100 lots (25 x Company A – bio; 25 x Company C – bio; 25 x Company A – IP; 25 x Company B – IP). Furthermore, biological data on the course of infection as well as on different isolates will be gathered to obtain threshold values for horticultural production. Based on the results of the first year, procedures will be checked in laboratory and in the companies that will minimize the incidence of black root rot. In the 3dr year recommendations will be given and implemented in horticultural practice to prevent postharvest losses due to Chalara infections in future.
