Collaborative project: Optimization of plant protection strategies for a sustainable and organic ornamental plant production. Coordination

Project

Project code: 2815OE084
Contract period: 01.04.2017 - 31.03.2020
Budget: 366,024 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The aim of the project is to develop direct and indirect plant protection strategies to produce high-quality organic ornamental plants. Numerous problems remain to be solved throughout the production process. Since the entire plant is sold to the end customer, the demands and challenges regarding quality are much higher than when selling the fruit only. Optimal qualities are an essential prerequisite for economic success and only when this ensured, it is possible to expand organic ornamental plant cultivation above the present level. It is particularly important to consider the management and plant protection strategies in order to produce healthy plants and therefore corresponding qualities. In order to achieve these optimum qualities and thus further expand organic ornamental plant cultivation, the project focuses on the following objectives:
• Optimization and further development of the cultivation methods for preventive and direct plant protection for the planting of ornamental plants and for further cultivation.
• Development of sustainable and direct plant protection procedures, against real and false mildew, lice, thrips and mourning glands.
• Detection of resistances and different resistance mechanisms of selected aphids and thrips for plant protection products used in organic ornamental plant cultivation.
• Development of technical solutions for practice:
1) Optimization and establishment of the spraying of plant strengthening agents
as well as liquid and solid fertilizers.
2) Optimization of the application technology of beneficial organisms in combination with the application technology of Nutrimite.
• Extension of existing networks using appropriate technology. Optimization of the exchange between practice, research, advisory and companies. Transfer of knowledge as promptly and practically as possible to the relevant target groups.
