Sugar intake in German children and adolescents: Time trends and long-term prospective relevance for risk markers of hepatic steatosis
Project
Project code: 2816HS024
Contract period: 04.12.2017
- 30.04.2020
Budget: 105,450 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Keywords: obesity, human nutrition, children, food pattern, malnutrition, nutrition
The aim of this project is a detailed overview about intake and time trends of different sugars (e.g. total sugars, added sugars, free sugars, fructose) since 1985 in German children and adolescents. Additionally, for the first time, the prospective relvance of a high sugar intake during adolescence for risk markers of hepatic steatosis in young adulthood should be examined. Since in general, people tend to underreport dietary sugar intake, sugar intake will not only be estimated by weighed dietary records, but also by a validated biomarker, i.e. the excretion of fructose and saccharose in 24h-urine samples. The project will use available data from the DONALD (DOrtmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed) Study. In addition, the excretion of fructose and saccharose in already collected 1000 24h urine samples will be analysed. Time trends in sugar intake from 1985 to 2016 and the relevance of sugar intake during adolescence for risk markers of hepatic steatosis will be analysed.
