Project code: 0313097
Contract period: 01.08.2004 - 31.07.2007
Budget: 212,436 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

Producing high quality seed lots, notably in terms of germinability, is a major concern of seed companies. Seed vigour loss may occur during seed production, seed processing as well as during seed storage. The availability of molecular and/or biochemical markers of seed vigour would allow seed producers to better characterise their germplasm and to better design invigoration seed treatments such as priming. But the molecular and biochemical mechanisms underlying seed vigour are still unknown. The aim of this joint project is to use global expression profiling methods (transcriptomics and proteomics) to find such markers on defined seed lots of varying vigour of sugar beet , one of the major crops in Europe. A successful collaboration in research projects related to this proposal has been established between all partners already for several years. Results of this co-operation will form a sound basis for the activities proposed in this GABI-Génoplante joint research project.
