Harnessing meiotic recombination in barley (Hordeum vulgare) (HERBY)
Project
Project code: 031B0188
Contract period: 01.10.2016
- 30.09.2021
Budget: 1,226,154 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: meiosis, recombination, crossover, barley breeding
Breeding for new varieties by traditional plant breeding is dependent on the generation of novel genetic variations. These are generated by homologous recombination, i.e. crossover (CO; reciprocal genetic exchange between maternal and paternal chromosomes) formed during meiosis (part of sexual reproduction). Particularly in cereals COs are restricted in their total number and in their chromosomal distribution and thus present major challenges for plant breeding. In barley (Hordeum vulgare), in proximal chromosome regions encoding one-third of all genes virtually no recombination takes place. Thus, breeders are limited in the development of new varieties as potential naturally available genetic variability remains untouched. To improve and accelerate barley breeding processes by using the natural genetic variation available within plants maintaining biodiversity and sustainably protecting available genetic resources, molecular genetics, proteomic and cytogenetic approaches will be applied to better understand the underlying mechanisms of meiotic recombination control and to translate acquired knowledge into barley in order to modify and ultimately manipulate the frequency and distribution of meiotic recombination events.
