Collaborative project: Innovative straw management with combi-mulcher - subproject 1 (StrohKoM)

Project

Project code: 28RZ5050
Contract period: 01.04.2019 - 31.03.2022
Budget: 248,101 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: crop production

The scientific investigation of an innovative process for extended straw management in cereal production is the subject of this research project. The focus is on a process chain that can be used flexibly in agriculture and is characterised by a variably adjustable straw flow in the individual process steps. Above all, the user is given the opportunity to extract a quantity of cereal straw from the field or to feed it back to the soil in a suitable manner, depending of the location and the crop rotation. This supports the goal of neutral humus balance and optimal decomposition in the soil. The variably adjustable proportion of the removed straw can be used as usual on the farm, marketed as a by-product or used for energy generation. The requirements and possibilities of the process and the technical solution are developed through extensive research into literature and patents and through an expert survey of manufacturers, scientists and users. Based on the requirements, partial solutions for the process units are determined and technical concepts are derived and evaluated on this basis. For the construction of a test machine, suitable process units for the partial tasks are tested and procured, if possible available on the market. The aim is to modify and combine the most suitable units for cutting, conveying and mulching, if necessary. Field tests are carried out for concept analysis. The investigation programme includes functional testing and further development as well as the recording of agricultural work quality, performance and energy requirements. A critical discussion of the new procedure and the combi-mulcher with regard to the requirements as well as the documentation of the procedure and the results form the conclusion of the research project.
