In Hesse apple juice and apple wine are pressed to approx. 20% from Hessian fruit and to approx. 80% from apples of other federal states or other EU countries. The demand for regional products is increasing among consumers and the Hessian state government has also expressed the desire for regional products. However, measures in orchard cultivation are not sufficient to produce the required quantity of apples. New ways of producing regional apples should therefore be considered, without reducing orchard production. With this in mind, the project ‘Apfelland-Initiative’ has set itself the goal of introducing the cultivation of cider fruit in Hesse and proving its economic viability. The aim is to increase the proportion of regional raw materials used in the production of apple juice and cider. The project will also include a study on biodiversity on the cultivated area. The results will be compared finally with the knowledge of biodiversity of orchards.
