Collaborative project: Analysis of locomotion in dairy cows using an innovative pressure measurement system for sustainable improvement of husbandry systems. Subproject 2 (KlauSens)
Project
Project code: 28RZ3IP085
Contract period: 15.04.2019
- 30.06.2021
Budget: 278,372 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: animal health, diagnostics, cattle, animal welfare, Prevention, animal husbandry, digital world
The development of a pressure sensor system for practical application on dairy cows ready to be put on the market takes center stage in the project KlauSens. Thereby pressure distribution under the bovine claw during claw floor interaction can be measured. The sensor system allows an objective evaluation of walking areas in cattle housing as well as the investigation of biomechanical effects and quality of claw trimming. Throughout the project KlauSens mobile pressure sensors, which are attached to the bovine claw, will be tested and evolved until they are marketable. Thus a sustainable improvement of husbandry conditions and optimization of claw health management in dairy cows can be realized. The overarching goal is a significant improvement of claw health in intense housing systems and the improvement of animal wellbeing. The pressure measurement system can be applied by different user groups such as veterinarians, claw trimmer, farmer, consultants for housing and farm management. The schedule of the project KlauSens is aligned on conception, development testing and adaption and of a mobile pressure sensors system and its electronical components for pressure measurements under the bovine claw during locomotion. Tests under defined conditions will be conducted to determine and analyze the sensors durability, functionality and reliability. Software, electrical components and telemetric system will be refined throughout the further course of the project. Amongst others, a comparison of pressure loads in different housing systems will be taken into account when analyzing and interpreting data.
