Collaborative project: Climate Protection-oriented Treatment of Biowaste for Agriculture. Subproject 1 (KlimaBioHum)

Project

Project code: 281B303216
Contract period: 01.10.2018 - 30.11.2021
Budget: 219,347 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: crop production, evaluation, product quality, recycling, emissions, climate, climate relevance, climate protection, climate change, quality control

"Within the scope of the research project, the foundations were laid for a climate-neutral production of biowaste composts in accordance with the circular economy and fertilizer management act. This enables every operator of biowaste treatment plants to elevate the climate protection character of their production facilities along the processing chain, from the acceptance of input materials and their processing to the provision of high-quality organic biowaste products.
The focal points of the developed strategies on limiting CO2 balances in the production of organic fertilizers from biowaste lie in the following areas:
· Detection and evaluation of greenhouse gas emissions during aerobic biowaste treatment by on-site field measurements.
· Recording and evaluating energy balances in biowaste treatment processes
· Climate-relevant evaluation of structural and technical equipment of biowaste treatment plants
· Proof of CO2 savings through the use of biowaste products for straw, peat and nutrient substitutions
· Development of a pilot version for climate protection quality assurance of biowaste treatment through voluntary in-house and external monitoring
· Verification of this pilot version, in particular the compliance with emission guide values in biowaste plants.
The above-mentioned developed strategies were carried out by the project partners:
· Förderverband Humus e.V.
· Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum gGmbH
· TERRA URBANA Umlandentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH
in close cooperation with experienced biowaste treatment plants and competent expert committees."
