The outbreak of a notifiable disease can seriously endanger the preservation of rare breeds. Insufficient health standards as well as the absence of effective prophylactic care can lead to an increased susceptibility for disease and thus favour the distribution of diseases and epidemics. Reliable and detailed information and advice about health management and prophylactic tools should be offered to all owners of rare breeds. The regulations concerning avian influenza, foot and mouth disease and swine fever include exceptions from the immediate culling rule for important stocks of rare breeds in the event of an outbreak. The aim is to identify a number of farms suitable for applying for a protection status as a model. In addition to that the study will reveal opportunities and limits for a special protection of rare populations. A On-farm-consultation for breeders and farmers keeping rare breeds on hygiene, health management and prophylaxis combined with special information on breeding healthy animals and animal welfare. B Informing keepers of rare breeds about health care, hygiene and prophylaxis, including details about the special hazards of epidemics for rare breeds. Creating flyers and organizing seminars to highten awareness of the importance of health management and disease protection. C Identifying important breeding units with a view to achieve a certified state of protection satisfying the legal requirements in cooperation with the local authorities. D Communicating to the public all project results concerning the opportunities and restrictions of the measures for the protection of rare breeds in the event of an outbreak.
