Collaborative project: Generation of recessive resistance against aphid transmittable virus yellows in sugar beet as an alternative resistance management strategy to chemical vector control - subproject 1 (PoleroRes)

Project

Project code: 2819112319
Contract period: 01.08.2019 - 31.07.2022
Budget: 250,920 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: resistance breeding, virus yellows complex, sugar beet, green peach aphid

Since the loss of neonicotinoid seed treatment, sugarbeet cultivation in Germany is threatened in its economic viability by aphid-transmitted yellowing viruses with high yield loss potential. Naturally occurring resistance traits are not available to the crop to efficiently control the virus diseases. Here, as part of a cooperation between the Institute of Sugar Beet Research (IfZ) and the sugar beet breeding company SESVanderHave Deutschland GmbH, it was possible to show for the first time, as an example, that susceptibility factors for yellowing viruses in sugar beet, so-called translation initiation factors (eIF), can be switched off and thus recessive virus resistance can be generated. The work provides the basis for specifically identifying natural variation in the sugar beet gene pool and making it usable for practical cultivation in a timely manner.
