Collaborative project: Experimentation field 'Digitalization in the Milk Production Process Chain ' - Demonstration, testing and evaluation of the functionality, compatibility and interoperability of new digital products and services along the agricultural milk production chain. Subproject 1: Coordination (DigiMilch)

Project

Project code: 28DE112A18
Contract period: 15.10.2019 - 14.10.2024
Budget: 3,336,777 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: digitalization

The objective of the experimentation field is to systematically assess digital technologies applied to all possible areas of a farm specializing in milk production, by means of the following demonstration projects: 'Management of farm manure”, 'Sensor-supported yield analysis”, 'Feeding management”, 'Connected farm technology” and 'Individual animal sensor systems”. Due to the high level of differentiation of the provider structure for digital technologies and the increasing expectations regarding the compatibility of different systems from different providers, a structured assessment of the functionality, compatibility and interoperability of systems should be carried out, focussing on the systems’ process chain. The performance traits of the examined technologies and of the overall process will be reviewed and compared and a SWOT as well as a cost-benefit analysis will be performed. Particular emphasis will be given not only to the empiric research and knowledge transfer in this project, but also to the demonstration of these technologies on commercial dairy farms. Following the selection of the commercial dairy farms and the assessment of the existing situation, a trial, review and demonstration of the chosen technologies will be carried out in accordance with all demonstration projects. The choice of the technologies is based mainly on their availability, with the objective of covering the as many of the products available on the market as possible. During the course of the experimenttion field, the requests and the challenges that arise in the workshops and in the stakeholder forum will be included in the demonstration projects' processes. Not only will the functionality of the systems be analysed and assessed, but also the manufacturer- and overall system-compatibility, as well as the interoperability along the process chain. Prototypes and pre-series products will at first be reviewed in a low-risk and low-investment test bed. Following a positive test outcome further demonstration and analysis will then occur in an on-farm environment. The incoming data from the commercial dairy farms and from the test bed will be collected in the LfL-data centre and will be available for further analysis and to evaluate the individual systems as well as the overall process chain. The current status of the digital technologies and their network will be presented on the commercial dairy farms in special events in the form of field and farm days and excursions. Furthermore, the knowledge transfer will occur both through established channels such as presentations, publications and conferences, as well as through new channels such as social media.
