Project code: 2218WK04A5
Contract period: 01.09.2019
- 31.08.2023
Budget: 1,058,497 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: educational offerings, public relation, forest pedagogy
By improving the communication of the climate protection performance of managed forests towards specific target audiences, the project aims to increase the political support for the management and climate-resistant remodeling of the forests, as well as an unbiased use of the sustainably produced and certified resource wood by the general population. This would indirectly increase the climate protection performance of the German forests. For this end, it is planned to analyze the current communicative approaches first, since forestry has been active for years in both public relations work and forest pedagogy all over Germany. Then, experts are to be recruited to pick existing best practice examples from the gathered approaches as well as develop new methods and media and subsequently apply them all on a larger area. The German Forestry Council (DFWR) will focus on addressing multipliers that have a direct or indirect impact on the climate protection performance of manages forest. This includes opinion leaders and decision makers amongst forest owners, administrations and civil society (journalists, environmentalists, tourism professionals, athletes). The German Forest Protection Society (SDW) will create learning environments off school grounds by qualifying personnel and producing teaching material, targeting locations relevant for forestry and the wood industry. This will allow teachers to provide an environment for students to experience processes in forestry and the wood industry firsthand, as well as their importance for protecting the climate.
