Collaborative project: Characterization of aboveground biomass and carbon storage in southern Bavarian forests by application of UAV-technology (C-characteristics)

Project

Project code: 22014418
Contract period: 01.04.2019 - 31.03.2021
Budget: 65,744 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: digitalization, C binding, monitoring, renewable ressources

The main objective of the project with the title "Characterization of aboveground biomass and carbon storage in southern Bavarian forests by application of UAV-technology” is to quantify the aboveground biomass and carbon storage with UAV-technology (drones) in a cost-effective and timely manner. The study will be conducted on inventory points of the National Forest Inventory in Germany, located in the southern part of Bavaria (excluding points in the Alps). The flight campaign delivers efficiently information on the presence or absence of trees on inventory points. This information can be used in combination with modelling results for increment of growth, ingrowth, ongrowth and dead-wood-turnover to estimate carbon-storage in forests analogous to the way of the Federal State Ministry does. The study is accompanied by time studies which enables a monetary comparison of the UAV-approach with traditional forest inventory campaigns. The method also allows detecting changes in forest structures (tree species, stocks etc.) after disturbances.
