Collaborative project: Development of thermo-mechanical modified wood based material with weatherproof powder coating using domestic, fast-growing wood species (thermo Holz)
Project
Project code: 22013718
Contract period: 01.03.2019
- 28.02.2022
Budget: 199,530 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: wood, weather resistance, renewable ressources
In the building sector coatings for exterior use are important for a long time. Wood and wood based material applications (e.g. gladding, terrace elements, garden furniture or playground equipment) need special weatherproof surface treatment. Today, there are existing different demanding surface treatments with liquid coating systems, mainly applied in several steps. Procedure and economics are limited by the energy-intensive and longterm kiln process. Solvent-based lacquers often not fulfil the environmental requirements. Electrostatic powder coating represents ecological and healthy alternative. Changes of humidity produce cracks in wood based materials caused by shrinking and swelling of wood. Thus, increasing moisture generates micro-fractures with microbial infestation and degradation. The aim of the research project is the development of new processes for improvement of weather resistance, dimensional stability and durability of wood based materials and products for exterior applications. The development will be realized with thermo-mechanical modified wood substrates together with the development of high resistant, environmentally friendly powder coating.
