Collaborative project: Use of hardwoods and woods from short rotation plantations as peat substitute for the development of plant substrates, grow bags and grow blocks (Grow-Bags)
Project
Project code: 22002118
Contract period: 01.03.2019
- 28.02.2022
Budget: 368,783 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: peat substitute, renewable ressources
The soil industry is looking for a replacement for the increasingly limited peat available for ecological reasons. Wood fibers are an interesting alternative as they are virtually endlessly available in sustainable forestry in certain annual quotas. The aim of this research project is to take into account the restructuring of forest management and the conservation of moorland in the sense of an ecological economy. For this purpose, substrate components for potting soil and substrates, as well as Grow-Bags and Grow-Blocks for vegetable production in the greenhouse, from future available deciduous trees will be developed and evaluated under practical conditions in plant trials.
