Collaborative project: Potential of algae-based biolubricant additives: extraction, application and technical properties - from the plant to the technical product, subproject P4 (HSW): Performance testing in metal forming (algaebased)

Project

Project code: 22025418
Contract period: 01.04.2019 - 31.03.2022
Budget: 225,290 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: biobased lubricant additives, renewable ressources

The overall objective of the project is the substitution of mineral oil-based lubricant additives with microalgae-based compounds. The project aims at identifying ingredients from microalgae, and further on proofing and demonstrating their potential for the use as lubricant additives in machining applications. The opportunities of this approach are (1) mineral oil-reduced lubricant application, (2) significant resource conservation, and (3) avoidance of the food or fuel conflict. Subproject P4 "Performance testing in metal forming" will be carried out parallel to the subproject P1 "Performance testing in the machining". The technical requirements and the performance of the additives to be developed will be identified, evaluated and described in two steps. The first step is done using testing devices in a laboratory scale. In the second step the applications sheet metal and massive forming are performed on the machine tools of the University of Applied Sciences, Technology, Business and Design, Wismar. To evaluate the performance of the additives in forming processes technical measuring equipment will be used.
