Collaborative project: Potential of algae-based biolubricant additives: extraction, application and technical properties - from the plant to the technical product, subproject P1 (HSB): Performance testing in machining (algaebased)

Project

Project code: 22004118
Contract period: 01.04.2019 - 31.03.2022
Budget: 718,715 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: bio-based lubricant additives, renewable ressources

The overall objective of the project is the substitution of mineral oil-based lubricant additives with microalgae-based compounds. The project aims at identifying ingredients from microalgae, and further on proofing and demonstrating their potential for the use as lubricant additives in machining applications. The opportunities of this approach are (1) mineral oil-reduced lubricant application, (2) significant resource conservation, and (3) avoidance of the food or fuel conflict. This subproject P1 "Performance testing in machining" defines the technical requirements for the additives developed for cutting processes. The additives are tested in two steps. First in a laboratory scale and in a second step under realistic conditions on machine tools. The results will be assessed by measurement analysis such as the determination of surface roughness, cutting forces and tool wear. The subproject gives a feedback to the research group regarding the chemical structures of the additives to be developed. The overall project is coordinated and controlled by this subproject.
