Development of the parental components for the generation of a sterile Chamomile variety – project phase 2

Project

Project code: 22008718
Contract period: 01.02.2019 - 31.01.2022
Budget: 509,134 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: medical and spice plants, chamomile, breeding, renewable ressources

In the framework of this project, the parental components for the generation of a sterile chamomile variety will be developed. Triploid sterile varieties are well established in fruit crops and ornamental plants, but are absolutely novel for medical and spice plants, including chamomile. A triploid, sterile chamomile variety is expected to exhibit significant advantages compared to diploids or tetraploids, especially the absence of self-sown seeds. The self-sowing cause persistent problems in subsequent crop cultures and inhibits the crop rotation, leading to the accumulation of chamomile diseases in the fields. Typically, sterile varieties are generated by crossing di- and tetraploid parents resulting in sterile triploid progeny. To achieve this, selfing of the mother plant must be prevented. A method to control pollination, and by this avoid selfing, would be generally valuable to improve chamomile breeding. A population of male sterile plants flowering in an isolated manner might also already fulfil the project objectives.
