Collaborative project: New markets for digestates by rolling agglomeration with secondary materials - Assessment of plant cultivation (GärAgglo)

Project

Project code: 22032418
Contract period: 15.02.2019 - 14.10.2020
Budget: 206,039 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: digestates, recycling, plant compatibility, plant availability, renewable ressources

The aim of the project is to develop tailor-made fertilizer products from digestates by rolling agglomeration. New products should be specially developed to enter alternative markets in the non-agricultural sector. The joint project consists of three subprojects: technology (technological product development), product (effects on plant cultivation), market (market potential analysis). In a first stage of the project, functional models with different focuses regarding the main plant nutrients potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus will initially be developed and evaluated for plant cultivation. In addition to appropriate nutrient analyses, plant trials will be carried out under controlled conditions. A methodological test battery will be developed and used to test the plant compatibility and horticultural suitability of the functional models. If this first project phase is successfully completed, a potential second project phase should follow. The subgoal will be to produce three prototypes of fertilizer agglomerates from digestates in combination with suitable secondary and residual materials for an exemplary use as fertilizer for tomato, lawn and flowering plants, respectively. These prototypes will be compared with commercial products in terms of their physical and chemical properties and their suitability for plant cultivation.
