The project PHLIP aimed to develop a mobile system for monitoring insect populations in fruit cultivation. For this purpose, a mobile sensor platform was built in the project, capable of photographically capturing insect traps in fruit orchards along a GNSS-based lane. The idea behind PHLIP was to automatically analyze insect traps through an intelligent monitoring system. Images of yellow sticky traps were collected in an image database, and the insects appearing on the traps were marked in the images. Subsequently, various object detection models based on deep neural networks were trained to learn the detection of insects on the yellow sticky traps. Within PHLIP, this was demonstrated with high accuracy for the detection of the cherry fruit fly. The evaluation of the yellow sticky traps revealed a high spatial variability of cherry fruit flies in the orchard. Therefore, a spatially high-resolution and simplified population monitoring would represent an ideal prerequisite for sustainable and spatially targeted plant protection management.
