Collaborative project: UAV based monitoring system for spider mites in greenhouse cultivation - subproject 7 (MiteSens)

Project

Project code: 2818514G18
Contract period: 01.02.2020 - 31.03.2023
Budget: 87,657 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: horticulture, monitoring, sensor technology, digital world, resource protection, resource efficiency, greenhouse cultivation / protected cultivation

The aim of the joint project is the development of a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) based monitoring system for spider mites in strawberries, cucumbers and roses in greenhouse cultivation (MiteSens). MiteSens should be able to detect the early infestation of plant leaves with spider mites as well as to monitor and evaluate the success of appropriate control measures with predators and/or integrated pesticides (acaricides). MiteSens is based on imaging techniques. In connection with a UAV with intelligent flight control as camera carrier, a high spatial resolution of the spider mite monitoring, a contactless approach as well as an autonomous operation is possible. The derivation of the necessary infestation information (location, strength, spatial-temporal dynamics of the spider mite infestation) from the localised image information is based on a machine learning approach, which carries out the corresponding evaluations in real time, thus enabling a rapid reaction to a possible infestation and can also be used for different crops.
