This follow-up project is intended to examine the new product "Cross laminated timber made from modified beech wood” and lead it to an industrial implementation. Thereby, the idea of the previous project "Usage of small dimensioned hardwood for cross laminated timber production" (FKZ 22003715) will be continued. In the previous project, the beech wood was optimized by using wood modification. The dimensional stability was increased and the modified beech wood could be used for the production of glued constructional applications. Furthermore, the fundamental properties were examined and first prototypes were produced. The results of the former project showed that the modified beech wood is suitable for the production of cross laminated timber (CLT) elements. However, further studies and developments are necessary to enable a production on an industrial scale. Therefore, the focus of the new project is the examination of the technical properties, which are required for a possible approval as a constructional product. The utilization of beech wood can be extended by using the modified beech wood for constructive applications, like CLT. Regarding the low yield results in the previous project (only a quantity of 6 % of small dimensioned timber was suitable for the production of CLT), larger dimensions of round wood are used in the new project. The present research project "Cross laminated timber made from modified beech wood” will focus on the following areas: • Yield of sawn timber when using larger dimensions of beech wood • Integration of red-cored beech wood in the CLT production, or alternative uses • Optimization of the modification process • Investigations on the new product "Cross laminated timber made from modified beech wood" concerning: fire behavior, strength properties and emissions • Design of a CLT production line, considering the use of hardwood
