Collaborative project: Film former based on the bio-based raw materials lignin and cellulose for microplastic-free cosmetic products (FibioKos)
Project
Project code: 2220HV037C
Contract period: 01.03.2020
- 28.02.2023
Budget: 315,164 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: renewable ressources, film former, bio-based polymer dispersions
In cosmetics, polymer dispersions are used for improving the durability of cosmetic products on the skin. These polymer dispersions consist predominantly of polystyrene-acrylate copolymers, acrylate copolymers or polyurethanes which have film-forming properties, are not water-soluble and are therefore necessary for increasing the water resistance of make-up products. To date, there are no film-forming agents based on renewable raw materials in the cosmetics market whose efficiency and variability are comparable to those of currently used petroleum-based polymer dispersions. Furthermore, these polymer dispersions are hardly biodegradable. If they enter the environment as microplastic, they are expected to be persistent for a very long time. Therefore, cosmetic products containing polymer dispersions are currently contributing to the worldwide problem of microplastic emissions. The aim of this project is to develop novel film-forming polymer dispersions based on renewable raw materials.
