Methods for reduction of the release of volatile organic acids from MDF made from beech wood (Buchen-MDF)

Project

Project code: 22006018
Contract period: 01.01.2020 - 31.12.2022
Budget: 154,672 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: renewable ressources, beech

The project intends to reduce the release of volatile organic acids from medium density fibreboards (MDF) made from beech wood by practical methods to enlarge the field of application of such boards. MDF suitable for deep drawing made from beech wood with a reduced release of volatile organic acids offer advantages regarding their use for the production of furniture parts. Beech wood respectively fibres therefrom by nature contain relatively low amounts of primary extracts (terpenes, fats, resins). It is expected that reduction of the release of acetic acid of MDF made from beech wood positively effects the emission behaviour of the MDF, improves their coatability using polyurethane adhesives (PU-adhesives) and reduces the risk of delamination of the PVC-foils used for coating. Furthermore, reduction of the release of volatile organic acids is presumed to improve moisture and hydrolysis resistance of beech wood MDF made with adhesives based on polymeric diphenylmethanediisocyanates (PMDI). This encourages wood industry to expand the use of MDF for building applications.
