Technical development of a concept for the Additive functionalization of bioplastic films for sensory thermoformed packages (FunSenso)

Project

Project code: 2219NR056
Contract period: 01.01.2020 - 31.12.2020
Budget: 84,273 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research
Keywords: renewable ressources, bio-based plastic film

The aim of the project is the development of a concept for the production of bio-based, thermoformed plastic films with capacitive electronic printing. For this purpose, bioplastic films will be produced and printed with conductive ink, in order to be brought subsequently into the final geometry by a thermoforming process. Although thermoforming is a common process for the production of three-dimensional molded parts, the use of bioplastics is far less examined. First, suitable bioplastics will be compounded and films will be extruded via blow film extrusion. Since the wettability of the plastic film with the ink is a prerequisite for the printing, this might be enhanced by surface modifications. The modified film can now be printed with conducting paths and subsequently formed by means of thermoforming. The regions and depths of the thermoformed films are different and it is crucial that the conductivity of the webs is sufficient even after the deformation process. The cooperation of two professors at Hof University of Applied Sciences provides the entire value chain for the production of thermoformed packaging and it is possible to coordinate results and iteration steps already in the early stages. During the project, the consortium will also be set up for a follow-up project in which, based on the results, the development of smart food packages will be sought.
