Zoonoses are a core topic of the One Health approach. For pork production, a reduction in the prevalence of salmonella in slaughtered animals is essential. For the upstream production process this means a real challenge. In the future, no salmonella-contaminated piglets should enter the fattening units - as far as possible. So far, they have been the main starting point of spread of infection. With the "Rye-SaFe concept", at the end of the project a product, this means a recipe for a rye based compound feed should be available that offers a simple, cost-efficient solution for reducing the occurrence of salmonella in piglet production. This also promotes animal health. Using the Pollen Plus® technology from KWS, the ergot risk is under control and the use of rye in reproductive sow feeding is possible. More than other cereals, rye contains ingredients that are fermented in the hindgut to butyric acid. Butyric acid is an essential agent that can reduce salmonella in the intestines of pigs. At the end of the project a new perspective for the utilization of rye will be available. Its prebiotic specific carbohydrates will be a cost-efficient, lasting, regionally basis for a dietetic concept to reduce salmonella prevalence in piglet production - from the gilts to the fattener.
