For many years claw diseases in cattle are rising and are the third leading cause of death after infertility and mastitis. The economic loss to the domestic dairy farming economy is considerable (> 2 bn €/year) caused by the early death, high treatment costs, lowered milk yield, pregnancy rate and fertility. The main goal of this R&D project is the development of a novel alley mat/flooring which gathers precise pressure measurements of steps to improve the diagnosis of claw diseases. Smart sensors inside the mat consist of high-sensitive, robust carbon nanotubes and are operated with electrical impedance-/relaxation spectroscopy that collect quantitative data several times a day. For the first time digital technology and artificial intelligent algorithms will be able to differ promptly between healthy and diseased claws and allow a constant surveillance via a user-friendly cloud service remotely accessible by veterinarians and claw professionals. Contrary to existing sensor mats, here the sensors are fully integrated in the mat with wireless data and energy transmission to avoid error-prone cables. Additionally, the new system can easily be integrated in common herd management system for further smart farming applications. The development is accompanied by extensive field trials supported by partner dairy farms of various sizes and with conventional or biological farming techniques. The early diagnosis of claw disease-related death will help to significantly increase the life span, milk yield, fertility and animal welfare of dairy cattle.
