Conservation of native crayfish by developing an innovative fish stocking concept preventing the spread of crayfish plague (AstaAkt 1)
Project
Project code: 2820BM001
Contract period: 01.04.2021
- 31.03.2023
Budget: 310,138 Euro
Purpose of research: Demonstration
The main threat to noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) in Europe is currently the crayfish plague pathogen Aphanomyces astaci. It is mainly spread by the invasive American crayfish species. One source of distribution of the American crayfish and its pathogen we suspect the accidental entry by the stocking of fish. Together with fish stocking farms and fish transporters, we will develop methods by optimizing operation modes as well as improving technical and chemical disinfection to reduce the risk of the introduction of crayfish and the spores of crayfish plague by stocking fish. This is an important step to reduce the risk for the threatened noble crayfish populations and will improve the motivation to stock noble crayfish among the anglers.
