Project
Project code: 281A709A20
Contract period: 01.12.2022
- 30.11.2025
Budget: 382,994 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: packaging, food processing, knowledge transfer, networking
The aim of the project is to develop an information and evaluation platform to promote the use of sustainable packaging solutions in the food industry. In doing so, a holistic, standardized evaluation tool will be developed that allows the evaluation of a packaging’s sustainability, taking into account its influence on food waste. This will provide decision support to stakeholders in food chains to increase the use of sustainable packaging in the future and reduce the use of fossil-based plastics. Furthermore, a consumer platform will be developed to provide information on the sustainability of different types of packaging in order to increase their acceptance and to create incentive systems for purchasing. For the users, the platform will be completed by short films that explain the complex background of sustainability assessment of packaging and that clarify the actions of the various stakeholders. The assessment tool will also be integrated into a standard so that, in the long term, packaging can also be comprehensively certified for its sustainability in specific fields of application.
