Studies on legume decline in clover and lucerne stands (TriSick – Trifolium Sickness)

Project

Project code: 2818OE141
Contract period: 01.03.2021 - 29.02.2024
Budget: 148,050 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: climate (climate relevance, climate protection, climate change)

The overall objective of the project is to investigate the complex biotic and abiotic factors that contribute to legume decline, and to develop options to control them. Site-specific approaches for resource- and environment-friendly, sustainable strategies for clover and lucerne cultivation are developed, which are suitable for organic farming and which can be transferred to conventional-integrated farming. For this purpose, relevant stands of red clover (Trifolium pratense) and lucerne (Medicago sativa) are identified and plant as well as soil samples are analysed. A diagnostic tool is developed which allows farmers to examine and control factors causing legume decline. Results are transferred to and validated by agricultural practice due to a close cooperation with the exemplary demonstration network for fodder legumes (Demonet-KleeLuzPlus). This is intended to ensure an on the farm level meaningful dimensioned and production-optimised clover or lucerne cultivation with a stable, high productivity. Thus, profitability can be saved in the long term and sustainably.
