Collaborative project: Mechanical weed control in a process chain based on high-precision positioning data - subproject B (MeProPos)

Project

Project code: 2818810B19
Contract period: 15.05.2021 - 14.05.2023
Budget: 37,350 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: vegetable production, integrated plant protection, horticulture, precision farming, weed

Project goal is the technical development of three agricultural implements, which work together as a process chain and enable the mechanical weed control. Basis of the technology are high-precision positioning data gained from GNSS/RTK-systems. Therefore, data from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like GPS-signals (Global Positioning System) are extended by data from terrestrial systems like RTK (Real Time Kinematics). Thus, the signals become usable for agricultural applications within precision farming regarding the position accuracy. The core of the process chain the storage and use of high-precision positioning data of single plants. These data are logged during the sowing or planting process. The mechanical weed control during the vegetation period is done by precision hoeing machines, which movable hoeing tools exclude the areas defined by the position data from former process steps from hoeing, and they remove the weed from all other areas including inter-row and intra-row areas. The new sowing and planting machines base on commercial machines, which are adapted or extended regarding drive and control technology. The new hoeing machine builds on a prototype, which was developed in a former project, and whose drive and control mechanisms have to be improved to reach readiness for series production. Compared to camera-based plant recognition technologies the system based on positioning data has the advantage of precise and robust operation even with small plants or dense vegetation.
