DIL will investigate the climate impacts and the social acceptance of a case-specific nutrient upheaval in aquaculture and A. platensis-based food systems. The life cycle assessment of aquaculture systems is carried out and the economic effects are taken into account through a life cycle cost analysis. Such an approach will target the context of mitigating numerous challenges, such as: climate change, uncertainty about food and energy, depletion of natural resources and ecosystem services. In addition, DIL will focus on investigating the conditions for up-scaling the heterotrophic cultivation of A. platensis to the technical scale, a suitable pre-culture approach and the determination of the inoculation rate in order to achieve high performance at the beginning of the cultivation on an industrial scale. Furthermore, cultivation parameters are identified in order to improve the biomass yields. The cultivation efficiency depends on the vessel geometry, the type of stirrer, the aeration unit, etc. For this reason, the cultivation parameters for cultivation on an industrial scale are optimized for the biomass yield, taking into account temperature, stirrer speed, pressure and aeration strategy. The resulting biomass is used for feed formation, which is tested in fish trails.
