Climate change

Project code: EIP-Agri-Ni-2021-LPTTH
Contract period: 01.01.2021 - 31.12.2023
Budget: 303,626 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Farming practice/activity, animal husbandry

The overarching goal of the project is to reduce the ammonia content and improve animal welfare in animal housing. The aim of the project is to develop a plasma-based air purification system adapted to the prevailing conditions for a pigsty, to implement this in the stable and to test for a reduction in the ammonia content in the stable as well as the influence on the animal. The project aims to increase both animal welfare and animal health and thus limit the use of antibiotics to a minimum. The use of plasma processes can represent an environmentally and resource-saving alternative to reducing ammonia through chemical-biological processes. When using an atmospheric pressure plasma, ions, highly reactive nitrogen and oxygen radicals, among others, are formed from the surrounding air by applying a voltage to electrically insulated electrodes. This causes ammonia to break down and pathogens are killed. The process promises to be less expensive to purchase and maintain and more environmentally friendly than conventional air purification systems.
