The focus of the R&D project is the comparison of Central European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.)forests and Central Patagonian southern beech (Nothofagus spp.) forests and the resulting conclusions for a transhemispheric sustainable forest management of temperate deciduous and mixed coniferous forests. The adaptations of keystone forest tree species to climate change and their response patterns to extreme events and disturbances are researched. The vulnerability and resilience of the forest ecosystems to climate change are analyzed comparatively. The complex interactions between the natural events (e.g. forest fires) and man-made impacts or unsustainable forest management are taken into account. The opportunities and risks of the planting of non-native tree species in these habitats are also assessed (e.g. impacts on biodiversity) and discussed. From the findings, conclusions should be drawn for a functioning ecosystem, preserving and restoration of biological diversity, risk-minimized forest management and the restoration of ecosystem services through functional forest renaturation.
