Collaborative project: Artificial intelligence for measuring respiration in dairy cows - subproject A (KAMI)

Project

Project code: 28DK113A20
Contract period: 07.07.2021 - 06.07.2024
Budget: 313,812 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: milk, animal welfare, data management, animal husbandry, sensor technology, AI Artificial Intelligence, cattle, diagnostics, precision livestock farming

Using AI technologies and developing their potential opens up new opportunities to sustainably intensify milk production and use resources efficiently and competitively. AI tools and data-based applications enable a better understanding of complex interactions between the husbandry environment and the animals housed therein. Animal welfare and health are improved, performance potentials are exploited and the use of medication is reduced. The project "Artificial Intelligence for measuring respiration in dairy cows (KAMI)" is developing a prototype for automated, image-based, individual measurement of respiration in cows. Respiration is one of the most sensitive parameter for vitality and health, and indicates deviations from the normal condition at an early stage. Until now, respiration can neither be recorded individually for each animal without contact, nor can it be evaluated and translated into recommendations for action.
