"The objective of this project was to develop a process for manufacturing a peat substitute product from used mushroom substrate and fermentation residues from biogas plants for use in crop cultivation and mushroom production. The relevant properties of peat for these purposes are low nutrient content, low biological activity and high water and air capacity. To mimic these properties, methods have been developed to biologically stabilize the starting materials and leach out the nutrients. The suitability of the substrate mixtures produced was tested at the State School for Horticulture and by a Bavarian mushroom producer."
