Production processes

Project code: EIP-Agri-Ni-2020-LPTT
Contract period: 01.01.2020 - 31.12.2023
Budget: 399,945 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Farming practice/activity, animal husbandry

For an efficient grassland/pasture management and also to ensure the profitability of the farms in the future with regard to the increasing extreme weather events, it is important for the farmers to be able to record the yields from their own pasture/grassland and to be able to organise the pasture management as efficiently as possible. In New Zealand and Ireland the measurement of grass growth using tools and decision support software (Pastrue Base Ireland) is successfully practised, but for the North German conditions the corresponding data is missing. Three focus farms in the districts of Wesermarsch and Friesland measure grass growth using Rising Plate Meters, while the University of Göttingen calibrates the data by additional, more specific sampling. The data obtained will then be used to adapt the Irish software to the North German conditions in cooperation with the Irish project partner Teagasc. In the second project phase the calibrated data will be applied and validated on further farms. The Grassland Centre of Lower Saxony / Bremen e.V. takes over the role of the project coordinator.
