Lavender cultivation in Upper Lusatia
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-SA-2020-LPTPPGB
Contract period: 01.01.2020
- 31.12.2022
Budget: 291,625 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: farming practice/activity, plant production and horticulture, soil, biodiversity, product/service, climate change
Due to the natural site conditions in Upper Lusatia, economic cultivation of classic arable crops is not possible in the long term. Therefore, the cultivation of perennial lavender plants should diversify the crop rotation and open up new income opportunities for the farm in terms of risk minimization. Positive side effects are expected from the permanent soil cover for the reduction of soil erosion, which is increasing as a result of climate change. The lavender flowering in the summer gap can also contribute to an increase in biodiversity. In the project, different varieties and cultivation methods will be tested and the production of regional products such as lavender oil, honey, scented sachets and cosmetics will be tried out.
