Collaborative project: Novel approach for the development of a heterosubtypic marker vaccine against avian influenza in poultry – Subproject 1 (following project)

Project

Project code: 2813200806
Contract period: 10.11.2008 - 09.11.2010
Budget: 743,742 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

A strain of Salmonella, which has been used quite safely and successfully for many years as an live oral vaccine to reduce Salmonella Enteritidis load in poultry, is modified by genetic engineering in such a way that it expresses highly conserved antigenic fragments of different influenza viruses, especially of the highly pathogenic avian flu (HPAI) virus. Such a vaccine induces mucosal immunity and should be more effective in protecting poultry against the orofaecal transmission of influenza viruses. The most promising antigens are fragments of matrixprotein 2 (M2) and of hemagglutinin (HA). The first vaccine strains expressing M2 fragments induced antigen specific humoral and mucosal immunity in chicks. It is planned to express HA-antigens together with M2- fragments in the vaccine strain and to test subsequently, how good chicks are protected against HPAI-virus infection.
