Keywords: animal husbandry, food industry, marketing/supply chain
Consumers are increasingly asking for products that are produced regionally and in a natuarl way. In order to meet this demand and to be able to compete with imported high quality products from oversea, pasture based production of lamb meat must be developed that ensures high quality lamb in Baden-Wuerttemberg. For this purpose, actors from all stages of the lamb value chain (breeding, production, slaughter, marketing) have agreed on a common project, with a focus on the production level. On farm investigations will be conducted to determine to what extent lambs can be produced in line with market conditions on pasture in comparison to fattening lambs in stables. In combination with extensive and intensive grazing methods, the influence of the sire line sheep breed on parasite resistance and carcass quality will also be investigated. The aim of the project is to derive recommendations for sheep farmers regarding the pasture based production of high quality lambs, to create a qualified database for the breeding of animal health traits and to organize the systematic data feedback from slaughter to producer.
